50 Years Forward: Tom Gilmore

While the Civil Rights Movement was underway in Birmingham, a rural county in western Alabama was also moving forward in civil rights.

One of those leading the way in Greene County was Thomas Gilmore.

In 1970, Gilmore was elected the county's first African-American Sheriff.

Tom Gilmore became famous for not carrying a gun, but because of his non-violent beliefs.
