BURGER BYTES: Sign of the Tigers

Posted: Updated:

There's only one man who can get the Avengers, rapper Rick Ross and Puss in Boots together in one place.

That's Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn. His coaching staff uses a card system to relay plays into the huddle.

"It makes it a lot easier and a lot faster," running back Corey Grant said.  "With the offense trying to run as many plays as we can, in the less amount of time it works best for us."

"In the past, I've done a lot of numbers and colors and things like that," Malzahn said.  "You got to evolve as you go especially when you have assistants that used to coach with you."

Malzahn tries to relate to his players. When he coached high school at Shiloh Christian, he used signals from biblical references.

Quarterback Nick Marshall tells me, assistant coach Kodi Burns selected these images.

"Rick Ross surprises me," running back Tre Mason said.  "I wasn't sure if they knew who he was at one point."

"There's a few of them I'm a little curious about," Malzahn said. "[Offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee] assures me its best for our players."

Auburn uses the same signaling system as did Chip Kelly's Oregon team when they met in the national championship in 2010.

"His signs were fancier than ours so iItried to get a little competitive with that. Hopefully we're doing a better job."

A better job, because we wouldn't like gus when he's angry.
