His name marks the field, and now it's in lights on the billboard in front of the school.
Vestavia Hills head football coach Buddy Anderson has reached a milestone in his 36th year at Vestavia. He is the only coach in the state to win 300 games at one school. He's only nine wins away from having the most in state history.
"It's not about me. It's about these kids," Anderson said. "Kids I've had, a lot are grown men now, through the years, this program is about them and coaches i've had with me all these years and their families."
One of those players is senior linebacker Sam Baker.
"He gets the players that aren't starting in the game, he gets the sideline up and in the game, ready to go," Baker said. "One of the main things he does is preaches at halftime, if the sideline doesn't seem loud enough, he's always on them."
Anderson said he was destined to be a coach.
"God called me to be a coach when I was 17 years old," Anderson said. "I know exactly where I was, the circumstances. I knew that was his plan for my life. Where I'd be or that I'd be there that long. I never dreamed that would be."
Friday night he goes for win number 301. It's just the next step to the next milestone of 400.
"I don't have any hobbies, I don't hunt, fish, or play golf," Anderson said. "I enjoy what I'm doing. I was called to do this. As long as I'm healthy and the good lord wants me to do this, I'll still be coaching."
Vestavia Hills (3-0) will host Gardendale (3-0) this Friday night. You can catch highlights on Touchdown Friday only on Alabama's 13 News at Ten.
