Body found inside Birmingham apartment with active meth lab

Posted: Updated:

The body of 23 year old Derrick Phillips was found inside a Birmingham apartment Friday morning, near an active methamphetamine operation.

The Birmingham Police Department reports officers were called to an apartment complex on the 3600 block of Clairmont Avenue on a call of shots fired.

Officers arrived, but not find any evidence of a shooting.

About 20-30 minutes later, dispatchers received a call about a dead person inside an apartment at that same location.

Once officers arrived, and discovered the body, they also noticed a strong chemical odor, and vacated the apartment.

It was later verified to be an active meth lab.

The entire apartment complex of 3 buildings was evacuated, and the death investigation was suspended, to allow haz mat crews to clean up the meth lab.

Four police officers were transported to a hospital as a precaution, after they were exposed to the interior of the apartment.
