We've had some rather lackluster college football weekends this year. Last week was the worst, but this weekend is full of marquee matchups.
Here are the top ten games of week four:
10. #5 Stanford at Washington State – 9:00 p.m. ESPN
Last week was supposed to be big test for Stanford against Arizona State, but that game was never close. Washington State is also on a three game winning streak, and a much improved team from a year ago.
9. Iowa at Minnesota – 2:30 p.m. ABC/ESPN2
Minnesota is 4-0 and would love to go into October unbeaten. Here's why, October for the Gophers looks like this: #18 Michigan, #17 Northwestern, and Nebraska. Iowa meanwhile is looking at similar October and can't afford a second loss this early.
8. South Carolina at UCF – 11:00 a.m. ABC
Don't sleep on this Central Florida team. They're unbeaten and coming off a close win over Penn State. A win over the Gamecocks will give them a lot of momentum heading in to the October 18th meeting with Louisville.
7. USC at Arizona State – 9:30 p.m. ESPN 2
This is a big game for both the Trojans and the Sun Devils. Both are 0-1 in the PAC12, and another loss might be all she wrote.
6. Virginia Tech at Georgia Tech – Thursday 6:30 p.m. ESPN
I wanna rock…
Va-Tech is wearing a new "Hokie Stone" helmet that matches their campus, but helmets don't win games. This is the best Thursday night game so far, but I'm not sure the Hokies can get it done unless their offense comes around.
5. Arizona at #16 Washington – 6:00 p.m. FOX
Arizona is unbeaten, ranked 5th in rushing, ranked 3rd in scoring defense, but I would take that with a grain of salt because they have not played anybody. Washington is also very good on paper and has at least beaten a so-so Boise State team. This game will tell us a lot about both of these teams.
4. #14 Oklahoma at #22 Notre Dame – 2:30 p.m. Alabama's 13
The Irish just made it past Michigan State and now have to host a surprising good Oklahoma team. Going into the season I was a little down on Oklahoma, but the Sooners are better than I thought they would be on offense. The difference in this game might be the fact that it's being playing at Notre Dame.
3. #23 Wisconsin at #4 Ohio State – 7:00 p.m. ABC
It's test time for the Buckeyes…Wisconsin is a physical team, and looking to turn the BIG10 on its head. But can the Badgers get it done? Ohio State has walked through their schedule so far, and it doesn't seem to matter whose lining up at quarterback. As I said this will be a huge test for them, but playing in the horseshoe might be enough to get them a passing grade.
2. #21 Ole Miss at #1 Alabama – 5:30 p.m. ESPN
Is the Tide on upset alert? Alabama beat Colorado State by 25 points last weekend, but it was a very uninspiring performance. Was it a hangover effect from the Texas A&M game or can the Tide turn it off and on that easily? Whatever the case is, Alabama will have to play better on Saturday. Ole Miss uses an up-tempo offense similar to Texas A&M and it will be interesting to see how the Tide goes about stopping it.
1. #6 LSU at #9 Georgia – 2:30 p.m. CBS
Doesn't get much bigger than this! What a month it's been for Georgia. This is the third time this season that the Bulldogs have been in my top game. So far, Georgia is 1-1 in the marquee game falling to Clemson and beating South Carolina. Georgia kind of went through the motions on Saturday, but they will be fired up for this game. Meanwhile, LSU jumped out on Auburn, but had to hold on at the end. To me this game will be won in the trenches. Both Georgia and LSU have strong running games and I think whichever team establishes the running game will be in a better position to win.
