BURGER BYTES: Going Up? ... With the Tide

Posted: Updated:

Bryant-Denny Stadium employs hundreds of people during gamedays.  But there's one job that gets an inside look, not of the game, but of who is at the game.

Tina Turner prefers to rise with the Tide, in particular, to levels six, seven and eight at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

She's decked out in her crimson and white, but confined to her elevator with no TV or radio.

"I can hear the crowds roaring," Turner, an elementary school teacher, said.  "As soon as I get back down on the floor, what happened? What happened?"

Turner is a 1992 Alabama graduate.  She's been working at the stadium since her freshman year in 1987.

She began working the gates, checking tickets and student I.D.'s before transferring inside.

"It's not about the money, it's about the people that I get to meet, the friendships that I make on the elevator with different people on all the levels," Turner said.  "I've seen and met, Taylor Hicks has been on the elevator, Condoleezza Rice when she came to the game."

There are two elevators that run parallel here at the stadium. But they have a connection.   It's Tina's mother, Ruth Murray, operates the other one.

Murray is in her 29th year operating the elevator.  She said if it wasn't fun, she wouldn't be doing it.

"With mom, it's kind of a fight, she has to take the visiting coaches, I only take home coaches," Turner said. "It's like a superstitious kind of thing.  I won't let her take Alabama coaches and they know it downstairs, they will not let them put the visiting coaches on my elevator.

"Nothing against them, but I have to stick with my home coaches."

Maybe that explains why Alabama has won 91% of it's home games since 2008.
