BIRMINGHAM, AL -

Supporters of imprisoned youth evangelist Matt Pitt are on a crusade to prove his innocence.

Pitt has been in the Shelby County Jail without bond since August for allegedly violating his probation. He's accused of impersonating a peace officer in Jefferson County while on probation for the same charges from last year in Shelby County.

Now, a group of his friends and followers are coming together to show their support.

A group trying to bring awareness to Pitt's situation has been seen around town and over social media spreading the "Free Pitt" message.  While Pitt has been in jail since August, his supporters say they don't think his imprisonment is justified.

"Free Pitt" supporters have held concerts and rallies at Railroad Park and City Hall. This weekend, they even traveled to the CNN center in Atlanta in hopes of spreading their message nationally.

Since Pitt's arrest, the "Free Pitt" movement and The Basement ministry have received negative attention. Whether the attention is good or bad, they hope to use the attention to spread their message.

"People compare it to a lot of things. The bottom line is it's the gospel message, that God loves you no matter what. No matter what you've done," said Vince Lovell of The Basement. "We give a message of hope, love purpose. And they can call it a cult, they can call it a church. They can call it whatever they want. Bottom line is that it brings more people to the event."

The next "Free Pitt" group is tomorrow night. They're going to have what they call a "jailgate" in the parking lot of the Shelby County Jail.
