Blue Cross and Blue Shield teams up with Alfa Insurance for health, dental coverage

BIRMINGHAM, AL -

THE "AFFORDABLE CARE ACT" -- TOOK EFFECT A WEEK AGO. TONIGHT, two major providers in our state are expanding their partnership in an effort to help Alabamians in search of health insurance.

BLUE CROSS AND BLUE SHIELD OF ALABAMA AND ALFA INSURANCE ARE JOINING FORCES TO PROVIDE HEALTH POLICIES. "ALFA AGENTS" THROUGHOUT THE STATE CAN SELL ALL MEDICAL AND DENTAL PRODUCTS EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY.

"BLUE CROSS" says THIS IS GOOD BUSINESS that may attract newcomers to health insurance like Roscoe Boykin, who has never purchased health insurance before.

"I can't go to the doctor like I want to and I need some health insurance," Boykin said.

He's not alone. There are a lot of Alabamians without health insurance -- but the partnership allows them a chance to get some convenient answers.

In his hometown of Jemison, and in hundreds of communities across the state, Alfa insurance agents can answer questions about the new health care law, and, sell Blue Cross products.
"Everything we sell to individuals -- health and dental -- can be purchased directly from an Alfa agent in any location, in every county," Blue Cross CEO Terry Kellogg explained in a press conference this morning.

He said this represents more choices in health care, but only to a point.

"75 percent of the population of Alabama right now, based on their zip code and county of residence, only has a Blue Cross option," Kellogg said.

Back in Jemision, Michelle Hues doesn't have insurance and doesn't want to buy any. Still, she plans to comply with the law.

"It's the law and if you're a law-abiding citizen you must abide. So you might go to a place like Alfa for questions? Without a doubt," she said.

Everyone in the state is supposed to be covered by the first of the year. So, the time for questions is now.

For many Alabamians, if there's an Alfa office in town, it could be the most convenient place to start.

There is no charge for the service, and, right now, walk-ins are welcome.
