Going green is going the distance on area roadways, thanks to the "Toyota Green Initiative."
The initiative includes twenty-two Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association and Southwestern Athletic Conference schools.
Under the initiative, each school will receive a leased Toyota Prius lift-back or Prius plug-in vehicle for one year.
The cars will be used by school employees for "campus related administrative and facilities use and will be delivered to each institution in early 2014," according to a news release.
We have to make sure we give back and give others the tools they need to leave this place as a better environment, said Birmingham City Mayor William Bell.
The schools will be provided with an efficient automobile, said one Toyota official.
Hollywood actress Tatyana Ali was also on hand and promotes the "Toyota Green Initiative."
