Tips on starting fun, new holiday traditions

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Holiday decorations have been taking over the stores now that Halloween is behind us. It's a sign that it's now time to start planning for the holidays.

Jennifer Durbin, author of Party Planning Tips for the Clueless Chick gives us some great tips for incorporating a few fun, and of course simple, new traditions into your holidays.

A Thanksgiving tradition to build on through the years

Personalized Thanksgiving Tablecloths and Placemats.  Before Thanksgiving, pick up a new tablecloth or placemats and a few permanent fabric pens.  Just before Thanksgiving dinner, have everyone write what they are thankful for this year or have the little ones decorate their placemat or a corner of your tablecloth.  Then tuck the tablecloth or placemats away for safekeeping and bring it out next year to add another special note.  Everyone will love looking back on their notes through the years.

Connecting with family across the miles

Family Fun Cookie Basket.  If your family is scattered across the country and you won't be able to make it home for the holidays send them your love in a homemade DIY cookie basket.  Is there anything more fun that baking as a family?  You can get as elaborate as you like, or just keep it simple. Either way, this is an easy way to send your love and a fun activity to those you can't be with.  Tip:  these also make the perfect hostess gift for holiday parties.

Year in Review Advent Calendar.  For grandparents or close friends who live far away, send them a smile everyday with this adorable advent calendar filled with pictures from the past year.  Martha Stewart has given us easy to follow instructions and printable numbers.  You can even make your own version by stringing together 12x12 scrapbook pages or photo album inserts.  Once you've made your calendar you can even re-fill it each year with new pictures.

As always, don't forget to scour the ½ Halloween sales for goodies and decorations you can use throughout the holidays or save for next year.
