Winston Co. AL. —Just northwest of Jefferson County and about one hour and thirty minutes away from Birmingham, you'll find Winston County. With a population of little more than 24,000, the county is rich in agriculture, warm hospitable people and a hub for training in various technical skills.
On the job front, the Alabama Department of Labor August 2013 data lists the county's unemployment rate at 9.2% which is higher than that state's non-seasonally adjusted rate of 6.7%. The numbers are a stark reality that jobs are needed in the rural county. This fact is spurring county and city lawmakers as well as economic development leaders to look at various initiatives aimed at training a great number of willing workers versed in various hands-on technical skills. The overall goal is to show manufacturing companies that Winston County has a knowledgeable workforce that can meet various needs of employers.
In this What's Working online video report, Alabama's 13 Bettina Boateng , Producer Danielle Deavours and Photojournalist Ben Bryson take you to Winston County to show you what officials, schools and locals are doing right now to attract more jobs, people and money in the area.
