Columbus volleyball, Brookstone football claim co-Athletes of the Week award

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. -

This week's WRBL Athletes of the Week is actually a co-Athletes of the Week award, presented to one team that won a state championship and one that is striving toward that goal.

The Columbus High volleyball team knocked off Marist in a four-set victory to claim the GHSA AAAA volleyball title on Saturday.

"The girls just play well together," said head coach Donna Fleming. "They have real positive attitudes. Volleyball is a game of errors and you have to be able to handle your errors and make good plays after making errors. The girls really are awesome at that."

For the other half of the award, it's to the gridiron, where the Brookstone Cougars put themselves on the cusp of the postseason with a 47-6 win over Central, Talbotton on Friday. That win set them up with a date with Greenville this Friday. A win means they are playoff-bound.

"We win, we're going to the playoffs," said head coach Brad Dehem. "It's been a challenging year in the private school league with teams moving up and down. There are lots of good teams out there. We want to be one of them and we feel like we have a chance. If we can get in, we have a great chance, just as good a chance as anybody."
