COLUMBUS, Ga. -

UPDATE: Officer Brian Rowe has been released from the hospital. 87-year-old Scott Miller, a Retired Army First Sergeant, was laid to rest Wednesday morning. He was buried with military honors at Fort Mitchell cemetery.

The Columbus police officer involved in a fatal crash Friday afternoon is listed in satisfactory condition at the Midtown Medical Center, according to hospital officials Saturday afternoon.

Officer Brian Rowe was driving in his patrol car when he was involved in the accident that happened on Victory Drive.

The Muscogee County Coroner's Office confirmed 87-year-old Scott Junior Miller died in that crash.

Miller is believed to have been driving eastbound on Victory Drive when he attempted to make a left on to 30th Avenue. As he turned, his pickup truck collided with a westbound traveling police cruiser.

Victory Drive in south Columbus was closed after the crash while officials conducted an investigation. Since the crash involved a Columbus police officer, the Georgia State Patrol is leading the investigation.

Good Samaritan Chris Sanchez, a Columbus native, stepped in and helped when he saw the accident. Sanchez carries an emergency kit in his car and says he pulled it out to help the wounded officer until EMS could arrive. He says he isn't sure what would have happened if he hadn't been there.

"I would like to think someone would have done something, but it comes down to, if you're in a situation and say someone should do something, guess what? That person is you," says Sanchez.

Sanchez recommends everyone be prepared for situations like this. He says he always carries an emergency kit in his car and has recently received emergency first aid training.

Sanchez says he checked on the police officer first because he was closer. Sanchez says when he checked on the man in the pickup truck, he was unresponsive and had a very low pulse. Sanchez said as soon as he got to the man, EMS arrived and he died a little while after.
