'Stock the Sled' brings in whopping 1,617 toys

RALEIGH, N.C. -

The toys piled up at North Hills and The Streets at Southpoint Friday as the "Stock the Sled" event brought in a whopping 1,617 toys.

Last year, the inaugural event brought in 1,167 toys at North Hills. This year, WNCN and the Capital Clauses extended the event to include Southpoint as well. The North Hills event brought in 1,346 toys and Southpoint 271.

"This year's 'Stock the Sled' event at the Streets at Southpoint and North Hills is more successful than we could have ever imagined," said Robby Lawson, president of the Capital City Clauses. "We are so thankful to WNCN and the communities in Wake and Durham counties for the support of this great event.

"The toys will surely help meet the needs of local children who are deserving of them."

An added feature this year was that toy-givers at Southpoint could sit in "The Voice" chair as part of the event.

All proceeds will be donated and distributed directly through the Salvation Army "Christmas Cheer" program in each community.

The Capital City Clauses hosted the popular Jingle Ball on Thursday, Dec. 5, at Marbles Kids Museum. That event raised 2,066 toys.

The goal this year is to raise 7,000 toys overall, and Salvation Army officials are thrilled with the effort.

"You're providing joy on Christmas Day for all of these families," said Lizzy Adams of the Wake County Salvation Army. "So, it's truly a magical time and they get to come into our toy shop and pick out toys for their kids. So it's really this empowering kind of feeling for the parent."

The Wake County Salvation Army is shopping to raise 25,000 toys overall this holiday season for the nearly 9,000 kids on its list.
