Auburn University warns against counterfeit tickets

Posted: Updated:
AUBURN, Ala. -

Auburn officials are warning fans about the possibility of counterfeit tickets both this weekend against Georgia and next weekend against Alabama.

This time they're taking new measures to prevent confusion inside the stadium.

Assistant Athletics Director for Public Relations Cassie Arner says, "Usually for a lot of our big games, we do see an increase in counterfeit tickets or counterfeit types of ways to get into the stadium, and this is obviously one of those big games, so we want to urge our fans to be cautious."

Arner says in the past Auburn has seen many incidents of fake or duplicate tickets. Before, when the tickets were accepted at the gate, multiple people would show up at the same seat.

Now, Arner says, that problem is solved. "This year we're going to know these counterfeit tickets at the gates when we scan them to come in," she says.

The current issue is barcode theft. Buying a ticket from the schools playing or the website StubHub are the only ways to ensure the ticket is valid.

"If someone decides to purchase a ticket online and get a printed piece of paper with a barcode on it," says Arner, "there's nothing stopping them from making multiple copies of that."

Arner says the best idea is to bring your salesman with you to the gate, where staff can check to see if the ticket is valid. "Have them walk with you," she says, "right up to the gate, and get ready to go in the stadium, and have them scan your ticket right then and there before you exchange any kind of money with them."

If you buy your ticket on eBay or Craigslist, Arner says try to talk to the seller before adding it to your shopping cart.

On game day there will be personnel around the stadium to answer questions.

Ticket tents will be set up at Gates 0 and 13. There you can get your ticket scanned to make sure it's valid.

In case you can't get a ticket, the game will be playing for free on screens in Auburn Arena.

In Alabama, it is legal to sell tickets outside a sporting event.
