COLUMBUS, Ga. -

The urge to compete isn't defined by age as more than 1,000 tennis players ages 55 and older will compete in the 2013 USTA Southern 55 & Over/ 65 & Over League Section Championships Dec. 6th-8th in Columbus, Ga.

The teams who represent various clubs, parks, recreational departments and organizations finished at the top of their local leagues and advanced through state tournaments. These teams will battle for the right to represent USTA Southern in the USTA 55 & Over/ 65 & Over League National Championships in Surprise, Ariz.

There will be about 150 teams; 55 & Over Men and Women (NTRP levels 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5+) and 65 & Over Men and Women (NTRP levels 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, and 9.0 combined) competing for a spot at Nationals. Most teams will play four round-robin team matches, each consisting of three courts, with the goal of making the final.

This year's event will draw the top teams from throughout the Southern Section's nine states: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. Matches will be played at four sites this year: Cooper Creek Tennis Center, Country Club of Columbus, Green Island Country Club, and Mary V. Blackmon Tennis Center at Columbus State University.

"We are very proud to host championship play in Columbus," explained Tournament Director Chris Walling. "The city has a fantastic host site -- the Copper Creek Tennis Center -- a fantastic Riverwalk and downtown attraction, along with a variety of great historic sites."

This year marks the 33th anniversary of the USTA League. Established in 1980, it has grown from 13,000 participants in a few parts of the country in its first year, to over 625,000 players across the nation today, making it the world's largest recreational tennis program.
