Smarter Living: Holiday stress and budget management

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

The average holiday shopper will spend around $750 on gifts during the holiday season.

The hottest gadgets and electronics will be at the top of many lists and the dollar figure can easily rise.

Sharon Tazewell spoke with financial expert Erica Sandberg about smart ways to reduce your shopping stress, manage your spending and still get everything on your shopping list.

Sharon Tazewell: Let's start with how we can create a smart shopping plan.

Erica Sandberg: The first step is to plan, but plan in a different way. Instead of making a shopping list for all the people you want to buy for, make sure you start with the amount of money you want to spend and that you're comfortable with spending.

ST: How about shopping wisely and making sure we make the right purchase?

ES: Tech items are smoking hot right now, but other popular items are things like jewelry, really cool cameras (and) smart phones. This is what people are buying this year so you want to get the best price from the best source. Do your research.

ST: I'm sure you've heard of the term "showrooming" where people go into the brick and mortar stores and find an item they like, then go online to find a cheaper price. What are your thoughts about showrooming?

ES: Nothing wrong with that. Your aim is to get the best price. Because some of these items are so expensive, you want to make sure they're also protected.
