LIHEAP provides heating assistance for Muscogee County residents

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. -

The Enrichment Services Program will provide heating assistance for low income residents of Muscogee County starting December 3rd. We're on your side with what you need to know to receive the free help.

The seats in the Enrichment Services building are empty now, but in about a week the office will be filled with residents who need help with their heating bill. For about 5,000 households in 8 different counties, the Enrichment Services Program will provide up to a $350 credit for a power or gas bill.

"We have so many people that are in need and so they are able to call the line, get themselves an appointment. On that same line, see all the documents that they need to bring in," said Markellila Lee, Community Services Director.

Clients must bring proof of income for the last 30 days, social security cards for everyone in the household that is 18 or older, the most current utility bill, picture identification, and also for every person that is over 18 that doesn't have any income, they must sign a declaration of zero income form.

Markellila Lee, the community services director, said when clients head to the office, they can look forward to excellent customer service.

"We take our time to take care of them, answer questions and give them, everything that they need to have the utility assistance," said Lee.

The Macon/Russell County Community Action Agency in Alabama does not currently have funding for their heating assistance program. They are expecting to get some funding before Christmas so they are encouraging those in need to call on a weekly basis.

The number for the Macon/Russell County agency is 334-298-6610 or 334-298-6614.

To make an appointment in Columbus you can call 1-877-276-6358.

Appointments will be taken by telephone only until the allotted appointments have been made for the month. After all the allotted appointments are taken, clients can call back the first week of the following month to schedule an appointment. There will be no appointments made the week of Christmas Holiday's (December 23, 2013- December 27,2013). All applicants will be seen at 2100 12th Avenue Columbus, Georgia 31901.

All applicants must meet the federal income poverty guidelines. If you miss your appointment, you will be required to make another appointment through the automated appointment line.
