JACKSONVILLE, AL -
Jacksonville State is one of eight Football Championship Subdivision teams remaining in the country and only three wins away from an FCS title.
The Gamecocks travel to No. 3 Eastern Washington for the Football Subdivision Championship quarter-finals this weekend.
This road trip is 2,300 miles away from JSU's campus. That's more than the combined mileage of all seven road trips for JSU this season.
Road trips don't bother the Gamecocks. The team is 6-1 away from Jacksonville, A;a.
"One of the neat things for us, we started workouts in the mornings," first-year head coach Bill Clark said. "That was a big deal to me, to really come out here, in inclement weather.
"We did spring training in the morning, all those things to me lead to, what do you do on the road. You got to pull together, you got to be a little tougher."
"When we get away everybody else, it's just us," quarterback Eli Jenkins said. "We come together, sometimes it would be no band, no cheerleaders, just us. We're a team."
Eastern Washington is famous for its red field turf, which could be a distraction for visiting teams. Clark joked that he might have his team practice just in their red turf endzones this week to get acclimated.
Jacksonville State and Eastern Washington kickoff at Saturday, December 14 at 3:00 p.m. CT.
