Fayetteville's Bicycle Man organization ready for annual giveaway

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

The well-known Bicycle Man giveaway is coming up next Saturday, and leaders of the non-profit organization that organize the giveaway say they are ready.

"I started out for my goal was 800, and I think we're close to a thousand bikes," said co-founder Ann Mathis. "So I am happy. I am really happy."

On Friday, Mathis and Bicycle Man organizers took some time for an open house at the Bicycle Man warehouse. It was a way to thank supporters.

"It's been a different year. It's been a difficult year, and this December has been really difficult for me but with the support of people around me it's been really great," Mathis said.

"The support has been amazing, and they don't know how much I appreciate it."

She says this year's support has been extra special because she wasn't sure how she'd carry on without her husband Moses who started it all. That is something she admits worrying about.

"90 percent of the people who told me they were going to help me carry this on, has really come through," Mathis said.

Mathis said the organization is still guided by her late husband's influence, but she admits it has been hard carrying on without him.

"It's hard going home sometimes and walk into an empty house, but with God's help I'm making it," Mathis said. "And my family will say, 'Ann, you can do it. You can do it.' I'm doing it. I'm trying my best to do it."

Bicycle Man board member Carlos Swan said everything is in place for the giveaway. For example, all of the bicycles in the warehouse already have tickets on them with numbers for the distribution. It is just one of the many details already taken care of.

"It may be a little different feel, but hopefully we create the same feeling that he wanted to create for the kids and that's basically a smile on their face," Swan said.
