Volunteers deliver hundreds of meals on Christmas Day

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. - Several volunteers were on hand Christmas morning to deliver Christmas meals to those in need. Damascus Way has been preparing this meal for weeks. Many volunteers arrived early Wednesday morning to start assembling the take home boxes of food.

"To let them know that the community loves them, that God loves them," said Deborah Hunsinger the Director of Damascus Way.

It's the reason that volunteers woke up early Christmas morning to prepare food and deliver meals to people in need in our community.

"It's just my way of giving back," said Sandra Ruffin.

Ruffin said she spent 6 months at Damascus Way.

"There was a time in my life where I couldn't give, not like I wanted to. It's seems like I had lost everything," said Ruffin.

But today, it's a different story. She opened gifts with her grandchildren, then got ready to serve.

"They know where nana was going when she left home, here to Damascus Way," said Ruffin.

The group delivered around 300 meals to those who couldn't leave their homes or didn't have the financial means to cook dinner.

"Jesus said just a cup of cold water in my name, and sometimes just a warm meal in his name and a smile," said Hunsinger.

She said that's what the holiday is all about.

"The job they  have here. It's just incredible. We have a ball. We just have fun," said Hunsinger.

Some volunteers have helped out each year for more than 15 years.

"My mother instilled in me as a young boy not be served but to serve. It's not going to get me to heaven, but it's not going to keep me out," said Doug McLeod.

Volunteers at Damascus Way have been delivering meals every Thanksgiving and Christmas for the past 50 years. Throughout our community, volunteers at several events served more than 700 meals to people this Christmas.
