Update: Suspect hospitalized after Phenix City shooting

Posted: Updated:
PHENIX CITY, Ala. - Phenix City police have released details about what led to an officer-involved shooting that sent one man to the hospital late Sunday afternoon.

In a news release, police said they responded to a domestic violence call at 1200 8th Avenue after someone reported seeing a knife-wielding man chasing his wife. Once police arrived on the scene, they reportedly found the man on his front porch holding what appeared to be an AK-47 style rifle. Police say he ignored instructions to put down the weapon, instead pointed the gun at police in an aggressive manner, causing one of the officers to fire at the man striking him once.

The case is being investigated by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation.

This is the second officer involved shooting in Phenix City since December. Last month, one suspect died after being shot by police along 8th Street.
