Columbus homeless man succumbs to cold night

Posted: Updated:
A homeless man in Columbus succumbed to the record breaking cold temperatures Tuesday morning, according to Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan. The man is believed to be the only weather related death in Columbus as of midday Tuesday.

Another homeless man found 51-year-old Paul Garner in a vacant lot near Third Avenue and 15th Street, Buddy says. The man was discovered around approximately 5:45a et.

The Coroner's office was working to notify next of kin but they believe Garner does not have any direct family members. Anyone with information is asked to call the Coroner's Office at 706-653-3260.

Six shelters will be open in the Columbus area Tuesday night in to Wednesday to give homeless people and others a place to seek relief from the cold.
