Oldest MLK Unity Breakfast to be held in Birmingham, highlights announced

On Monday, January 20th, 2014, hundreds will pack Birmingham's Boutwell Auditorium early in the morning to network, exchange ideas and recharge efforts to further unite the masses in honor of the legacy of Civil Rights Leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

 With a theme of " Unity: Embracing Liberty and Justice," this year's 28th annual unity breakfast will feature a program laced with city and local officials who will salute the efforts of  a wide spectrum of civil rights leaders locally and globally. The honorable Houston L. Brown, the first African-American presiding judge of the 10th Judicial Circuit of Jefferson County will render the keynote address.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (January 9, 2013) - The 28th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Breakfast, will take place Monday, January 20, 2014 at 7am at the Boutwell Auditorium. The breakfast, themed Unity: Embracing Liberty and Justice for is the oldest Unity Breakfast in the country and honors the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The keynote address will be given by the Honorable Houston L. Brown, the first African American Presiding Judge of the 10th Judicial Circuit, Jefferson County, Alabama. In addition, the program will feature presentations by Mayor William A. Bell, Sr., Council President Johnathan Austin and other city officials, as well as a memorial tribute honoring the lives and legacies of local, state, national and international civil rights leaders, including

Nelson Mandela, Maxine Herring Parker, Demetrius Newton, Jack Zylman, Rev. Lamar Weaver, Willie Leon Williams, Jr and Eddie J. Sanders, Jr.

The event will also feature a musical performance by The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Choir and a catered breakfast by Chef Clayton Sherrod.

In the wake of Birmingham's economic recovery, and conclusion of the 50 Years Forward commemoration, this 2014 Unity Breakfast sets the stage for continued solidarity and progress within our city. The Unity Breakfast is presented by the Birmingham Metro Diversity Coalition, Greater Birmingham Ministries, Metro Birmingham NAACP, the

Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the Community Affairs Committee of REV Birmingham.
