Barbour Intermediate and Lafayette High added to "failing schools" list

Posted: Updated:
Two Alabama area schools are on a new list of schools classified as failing in Alabama.

The Alabama Department of Education says Barbour County Intermediate School and Lafayette High School are among five schools added to the "failing schools" list.

As News 3 showed you in November, Alabama ranks more than 1,500 public schools based on reading and math scores. Those ranked in the bottom 6% for any 3 of the past 6 years are considered "failing."

Abbeville High School and Jeremiah A. Denton Middle School in Mobile County and Bessemer Middle School have also been added to the list.

Four schools dropped off the list: Samson Middle School, Brighton Middle School and Robinson Elementary School in Birmingham; and Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School in Tuscaloosa.

Three schools came off the list because they closed: Center Street Middle School and Hill Elementary School in Birmingham and Tarrant Middle School.
