FORT BENNING, Ga. - Ahead of a weekend of MLK remembrance events across the area, U.S. Army officials encouraged everyone to remember Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s legacy during an event on post Wednesday.

"One of the strength's of our army is our diversity," Major General H.R. McMaster told News 3 after the event. "So if you ever exclude any group of Americans, what you do is deny yourself all their talent and what they can contribute to the team."

Students from Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School performed part of Dr. King's speech in song during Wednesday's event.

Additional MLK remembrance events are planned for this weekend, including:

  • In Columbus, the mayor's commission on Unity, Diversity and Prosperity hosts the first ever MLK Legacy Commemoration. "The Dream Lives" will take place Saturday at Noon at the Government Center Plaza.
  • On Monday, the Trade Center will host Alpha Phi Alpha Unity Award breakfast at 7a. The keynote speaker is United States Senate Chaplain Dr. Barry Black. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door.
  • Also on Monday, the Rainbow/Push Coalition will pay tribute to Dr. King with a meal and clothing for the homeless, unemployed, and under-employed and their families. Senior citizens are also invited. The event will be held at the Liberty Theater from Noon until 5p.
