Alabama gymnasts Kim Jacob and Katie Bailey both earned Southeastern Conference honors during the opening week of the 2014 season the league office announced Tuesday. Jacob was named the SEC Gymnast of the Week while Bailey was named the SEC Freshman of the Week.
“Kim and Katie both helped get us off to a tremendous start against Missouri last Friday,” UA head coach Sarah Patterson said. “It was another in a long line of outstanding performances by Kim and Katie showed the competitive drive and spirit that was one of the reasons we wanted her here at Alabama.”
Jacob opened her senior season by leading Alabama to a win over Missouri with a 197.150, the highest opening meet score in Alabama school history. Jacob was honored with the Capital One Impact Performance of the Week after tying her career-best score with a 39.525 to win the all-around against the Tigers.
The Raleigh, N.C. native won the uneven bars with a career-best 9.925 and the balance beam with a 9.875. Her 9.925 on the uneven bars paced the Tide to a 49.475, its highest team score since the 2010 season and the highest uneven bars score in the nation last week. In addition to her three wins on the night, she was second on the floor exercise with a 9.925. Jacob is ranked second in the nation in the all-around, 3rd on the uneven bars, 6th on the floor exercise and 11th on the balance beam.
Bailey opened her Crimson Tide career by taking second in the all-around with a 39.325, making her the highest ranked freshmen in the nation in the all-around, checking in at No. 9 overall. She finished in the top five on all four apparatus, and was the top freshman finisher on three of the four apparatus. In addition to ranking ninth in the all-around, Bailey is ranked 17th nationally on the uneven bars.
Alabama travels to Knoxville Friday, Jan. 18 to compete against No. 17 Kentucky and No. 6 Nebraska in the Ozone Collegiate Gymnastics Classic which will be held in the Knoxville Convention Center.
