Smiths Station Wrestling wins Athletes of the Week

Posted: Updated:
SMITHS STATION, Ala. -

The Smiths Station Panther wrestling team has reeled off a 26-1 record so far this season, and for that, they are the latest winners of the WRBL Athletes of the Week Award.

Most recently, they won the Gary Silva Invitational. While seemingly unbeatable as a team, they are made up by a number of solid individual competitors as well.

"I'm having a pretty good season," said senior (126 lbs.) Joshua Jamieson. "I need to work a little harder. I'm 36-0 right now, still undefeated."

The team isn't satisfied.

"We do a lot of running to keep our conditioning up," said junior (132 lbs.) Marcus Ruffin. "Wrestle hard, take shots. We try not to stall at all."

Each wrestler has individual goals that, if accomplished, will mean a successful season for everyone.

"My goal is to place well at sectionals and just go to state and place at state," said seventh grade (126 lbs.) Maxwell Kauffman. "That's my ultimate goal is to place at state this year."

The success, while not a shock, still has surprised their head coach.

"We always expect to win at Smiths Station, but I don't think I could expect a young team like this to be 26-1," said head coach Tommy Sanders. "We've been blessed by God in a lot of ways, but the kids have really worked hard and made themselves better. That's the reason we are where we are."

The Panthers are next up at home on Friday when they begin the Smiths Station Invitational.
