Video: Richard Shahan released from Jefferson County Jail

BIRMINGHAM, AL - Former associate pastor Richard Shahan has been released from the Jefferson County Jail on $100,000 bond.

Shahan is charged with murdering his wife Karen Shahan on July 23, 2013 at the couple's home on Hugh Circle in Homewood.  

Court records show that Karen Shahan was stabbed several times and cut with a knife.

Earlier Friday, Judge Shelly Watkins issued his electronic monitoring order for Shahan.

The former Children's Pastor at First Baptist Church of Birmingham will live with his mother in Homewood while out on bond.

The order states that Shahan's only 'allowed outings' include doctor appointments, court appearances and attorney appointments.

The electronic monitoring includes 'intensive supervision' of a radio frequency device 24 hours a day. 

"Any infraction, however slight, elicits a response from an EM officer," the order explains.

In the wake of of his wife's death, Shahan took a leave of absence from his position as children's minister at First Baptist Church of Birmingham. He announced his resignation on Nov. 29, and shared his intentions to pursue mission work overseas. 

During a bond hearing on Thursday, prosecutors said that Shahan was stopped in Nashville to take a flight to Frankfurt, Germany on his way to ultimate destination of Kazakhstan.

Prosecutors claim that Shahan's motive for the trip was to marry his boyfriend overseas.

They also stated that Shahan had $27,000 in foreign currency on him when he was stopped at the Nashville airport.

Shahan will next appear in court at his preliminary hearing on February 5th.
