28th annual Unity Breakfast held in Birmingham Monday

Events to honor the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. began in Birmingham with the Unity Breakfast.

It was the 28th year of the event, and took place at the Boutwell Auditorium.

The Unity Breakfast theme was “Unity: Embracing Liberty and Justice” is the oldest Unity Breakfast in the USA.

The keynote address was given by the Honorable Houston L. Brown, the first African-American Presiding Judge of the 10th Judicial Circuit, Jefferson County.

There was also a tribute honoring the lives and legacies of local, state, national and international civil rights leaders, including

Nelson Mandela, Maxine Herring Parker, Demetrius Newton, Jack Zylman, Rev. Lamar Weaver, Willie Leon Williams, Jr and Eddie J. Sanders, Jr.
