Oxford burglary suspect charged with possessing pipe bomb

OXFORD, AL - Oxford Police have announced bomb possession charges against a man they originally arrested for burglary.

Lieutenant L.G. Owens confirmed they have charged Johnny Wade Stevens with possessing and transporting a destructive device, along with burglary and drug possession.

Lieutenant Owens said that last Friday they arrested Johnny Stevens after a homeowner reported a burglary.

The homeowner told police he spotted Stevens stealing a heater out of his home.

Once police caught up with Stevens and searched his truck, Owens claimed they found a pipe bomb made out of PVC pipe in the bed of the vehicle.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms was called in for assistance.

David Hyche, with the Birmingham ATF Office, told Alabama's 13 the device was later rendered safe by the Jefferson County Bomb Unit.
