One suspect missing, two arrested in Columbus murder of Fort Mitchell man

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. - Two have been arrested and one remains missing after a fatal shooting and attempted armed robbery in Columbus Friday morning.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Christopher Wommack, Columbus police announced Friday evening. Wommack, 19, is wanted on charges of Murder, Criminal Attempt Armed Robbery and Aggravated Assault following the shooting death of Troy Saunders. Police consider him "armed and dangerous."

Saunders, 39, of Fort Mitchell, was found dead inside a car on Gentian Boulevard Friday morning around 12:45 a et. Officers found Saunders and his vehicle near the Burger King restaurant after responding to a 911 call regarding "shots fired" near the Motel 8 on Warm Springs Road.

Niesha Jones, 17, and Mayson Gibson, 20, have been arrested and charged with murder, aggravated assault and criminal attempt armed robbery. They will appear in Recorder's Court Monday morning.

Columbus State University Police issued a statement early Friday morning because of the close proximity the shooting had to their man campus. It reads in part:

"CSU Police were notified at 1:15 am by Columbus Police that they were working a robbery and homicide investigation at two businesses adjacent to the main campus. It appears the suspects have left the area and there is no additional identifying information at this time. It appears by officers on the scene that none of the parties involved are related to the university..."

Anyone with information in this case is asked to call the Columbus Police Department at 706-653-3400.
