Clay Aiken running for Congress in NC

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Former "American Idol" runner-up Clay Aiken is running for Congress in North Carolina.

The political website "The Hill" reports Aiken will challenge Republican Representative Renee Ellmers in the 2nd Congressional District.

The Associated Press talked to veteran Democratic consultant Gary Pearce, who said Aiken had talked to him and other advisers about running.

The district leans Republican after the re-districting from 2010, and Democrats are expected to face a tough race against Ellmers. She beat veteran Democrat Bob Etheridge in 2010 and Steve Wilkins in 2012. In 2012, she won 56 percent of the vote.

The singer is expected to launch his campaign next month, according to the website.

Aiken, 35, is gay and has a son, Parker, who was born trhough in-vitro fertilization.

Aiken is already making political commentary on his official Twitter account.

However, the Democratic primary could be a tough one. Former N.C. Commerce Secretary Keith Criscoe, a former Asheboro councilman, has announced he is running as well.Aiken Twitter
