Car crash turned shooting leaves one dead Tuscaloosa

TUSCALOOSA COUNTY, AL - A car accident and shooting has left one dead and one behind bars.

The two car accident happened around eight-thirty Thursday, January 30 just past exit 100 in the southbound lanes on Interstate 20/59. The south bound lanes near the Abernant/Bucksville exit were blocked last night while investigators cleaned up a crash scene and talked to witnesses.

Sergeant Dale Phillips, Commander of the Tuscaloosa County Metro Homicide Unit, believes  Roderick Dale Washington Jr grabbed a handgun and shot the driver of another car, Frederick Lee Blakely, killing him.

But Phillips thinks that happened after the two were racing each other on the interstate. He said, “I think one car was driving at a high rate of speed and another decided my car will run as fast as yours and they just choose to kind of pace each other down the interstate at a high rate of speed weaving in and out of traffic.”

Blakely died at the scene and Washington was arrested and is charged with capital murder. Detectives said other drivers stopped when the accident happened, possibly to help. “There were witnesses on the scene when the shooting occurred,” Phillips added.

Investigators believe the victims and suspect did not know each other and they think that this incident was random.

But what motivated Washington to shoot Blakely is not clear. Neither is where all this started. The Sergeant said, “We know where it ended, but to say just how long they had been racing each other down the interstate we really don't know.”

Phillips said they received lots of 911 calls so they are in the process of tracking down each caller in hopes of filling in some of the blanks.

The homicide unit at this point thinks the two drivers, Washington and Blakely were the only people involved.
