Wilkins isn't running for another NC House term

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

Add another Democratic legislator to the list not running for another term in the North Carolina General Assembly this year as candidate filing officially begins next week.

Rep. Winkie Wilkins of Roxboro confirmed Monday his fifth two-year term would be his last, citing health problems. The 73-year-old Wilkins has an irregular heartbeat and says two procedures during last year's session meant he missed 16 legislative days.

The retired newspaperman says he's proud of his constituent services and adoption-related laws he shepherded through the legislature.

He's the fourth House Democrat who's announced they're not seeking re-election. They include veterans Reps. Joe Tolson of Pinetops and Alma Adams of Greensboro and two-termer Marcus Brandon also of Greensboro. Adams and Brandon are running for the 12th Congressional District seat vacated by Mel Watt.
