IRS warns of phone scams during tax season

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Internal Revenue Service is warning taxpayers of phone scams this tax season. Mark Green at the IRS says there have been reports in several states of people fraudulently posing at IRS workers to steal taxpayers money. He gives some advice on how to keep your funds in your pocket.

Green says fraudulent calls are becoming more and more common around tax time as people are filing for their refund checks. He says the callers can get hostile and insulting but people shouldn't fall for it.

"If it's an out of the blue telephone call where it requests you to pay money you don't owe, requests personal information such as your social security number, checking or savings account or asks you to have a prepaid loaded card sent to us to pay off a debt that you don't owe, that is a scam," said Green.

He says the IRS does not make calls to individuals about taxes and they communicate mainly through mail. Green also warns people to check the credentials of tax preparers and says the IRS offers a free filing service online. Green says the process is quick, simple, and secure and eliminates a lot of the common mistakes on paper forms like incomplete information or forgotten signatures.

"You can cut down on errors. You can cut down on lost or stolen checks through the mail by using paper returns. The most important thing is you have a sense of security knowing that you and the IRS have a relationship without a middle man," said Green

After you file online within 24 hours you will receive an email from the IRS saying they received your forms and your refund will be direct deposited into your account normally within 21 days.

If you need more information about free online filing you can visit irs.gov.
