Cool School Jordan High

Posted: Updated:
The phrase "hands-on learning" takes on a whole different meaning at Jordan High. This week's Cool School prepares students for their careers and give them a jump start on their future goals.

Student Aaliyah Bellamy says that her sister helped her to want to become a nurse one day. She said, "She's into nursing and I see her determination and she likes it so i started to get into it myself. My career's changed over the years, but its also always been in the nursing field so I know this is the field I want to be in."

Asia West is looking forward to working with kids. She said, "I like helping people and I plan to become a pediatrician because I like kids too."
In their course, the students learn what it takes to be a nurse and about body mechanics. It's one of several classes that's part of the career academy at Jordan High.

The Career Tech Supervisor for the school Amy Woehler said, "We have quite a diverse set of opportunities for kids. We have everything from culinary arts which is a pretty popular program construction, masonry, metal, welding shop with welding and sheet metal, as well as machining automotive, engineering, health occupations, teaching and education, website design."

What else is cool about this school? Students get to work on different types of metals during their career technical courses. Jacob Martel said, "I just think that's cool that you can get metal so hot and melt it together and it stays. Here at Jordan we have hands on experience and we're not just in the classroom all the time. So it's really cool."

The Career Tech Supervisor says that the school has a lot to offer students including a comprehensive academic program, AP classes, and career tech opportunities. Amy Woehler said, "When students graduate from Jordan, their not only ready to go to college, or post secondary school or per technical school, but their also ready for a job right out of graduation."
