A student at Jefferson State Community College in Birmingham lied about being kidnapped earlier this week.

Police were called to the Jefferson Campus in east Jefferson County February 4, 2014 to search for 18-year-old Gabriell Coleman.Officers were told by family members that Coleman called and claimed to have been abducted by two men. She was later found alone in the CVS parking lot on Center Point Parkway. The following day, Coleman confessed that she was never kidnapped. She claimed she left school with a friend and went to a house where alcohol was served. According to police, this was the second time Coleman claimed to have been kidnapped. The first incident happened when she was in high school. Coleman now faces misdemeanor charges for filing a false police report.

“It is very imperative that our citizens understand that accusations of this magnitude will not be tolerated and those responsible will be held accountable. Filing a false report is a crime and false police reports can be damaging both for police efforts as well as any person who might be the victim of the false report. The amount of resources and manpower that is required to conduct this type investigation cost the city thousands of dollars. However, this incident will not deter nor hinder the Birmingham Police Department from thoroughly investigating future reported crimes,” said Lt.. Sean Edwards of the Birmingham Police Department.
