U.S. Olympic medal winners will be paid and taxed

Posted: Updated:
U.S. Winter Olympians will earn payments for winning medals in Sochi.

The U.S. Olympic Committee pays $25,000 for gold medals, $15,000 for silver medals and $10,000 for bronze.

However, because these payments are seen by the U.S. government as income earned abroad, Olympic medalists will be taxed.

The federal taxes will be income-based and can range from $1,000 to $9,000.
