Daycare sexual abuse trial underway in Jefferson County

Posted: Updated:
JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL - Opening statements began today in the trial of a teenager accused of sexually abusing four children at a daycare in Clay.

In August 2013, Jefferson County deputies received a report that Eric Lemont Higdon, 17,  had inappropriate contact with a child at Mama's Place Christian Academy. Three other families then reported similar incidents. The victims were 5, 5, 4 and 3 years old.

The teenager was the son of one of the daycare workers, who has since been dismissed from the facility.

Deputies determined that Higdon was coming to the daycare on a regular basis and sexually abusing children while he was there.

A jury was selected Monday.

The trial is being held in Jefferson County Circuit Court.
