Columbus euthanasia rate hits all-time low

Posted: Updated:
The euthanasia rate fell to a 38% rate, down from 52% in 2012, according to a press release from the Columbus Animal Care and Control Center. The euthanasia rate has been on a decline since 2010 when the rate was 80%.

City officials cite two primary factors -- the Save A Pet Plan and the recent spay and neuter grants, which include a nearly $60,000 grant ACCC received last year to start a Trap, Neuter, Return program.

The Save A Pet Plan began in the spring of 2011. The city increased its network of volunteers and encouraged innovation such as internet promotion and off-site adoption efforts. Through the Trap, Neuter, Return program ACCC has spayed or neutered and vaccinated 800 of the 1,000 feral cats so far. The ACCC also hopes to receive a $1 million grant to continue their efforts.
