Alabama lawmaker wants daily prayer in schools

Posted: Updated:
MONTGOMERY, AL - A state lawmaker has a new bill that will allow public school teachers to begin each day by reading opening prayers given in Congress.

Republican Representative Steve Hurst, who represents both Calhoun and Talladega Counties,  is the bill’s sponsor.

Hurst says teachers would be given 15 minutes each day.

According to the bill, teachers can use that time to teach a lesson on the procedures of Congress, and read a congressional opening prayer.

A public hearing was held Wednesday by the Alabama House Education Policy.

Opponents say the proposal is unconstitutional.
