Sledding, a rare sight in Alabama

Posted: Updated:
BIRMINGHAM, AL - People in our area don't always get to do it, but this winter people were able to sled.

Even members of our Alabama's 13 News team had a little fun.

“The winters just aren't as predictable as they used to be it used to be we'd get a little bit of snow every year. and it's not like that anymore and it's kind of hard to figure out it really is," said Wayne Cleage.

For 71 years, Five Points Paint and Hardware has been in business. Cleage is the current owner.

He said, “We don't have that many sledding days anymore.”

However, Cleage said this winter sleds were a hot item for the cold weather.

“We had parents from Trussville, Pelham, and north of here…just all around coming into the city because nobody else had any sleds,” he said.

The store has inflatable sleds, wooden sleds and plastic sleds.

“When I closed up last night there was no snow on the ground. When I left my truck was covered with snow. I got home came back this [Thursday] morning the roads were just about clear.”   Cleage laughed and said, “What is that a one day winter?”

The snow may not have lasted for long, but the memories probably won't melt away as fast.
