Winter storm almost turned sweet holiday sour for local florist

Posted: Updated:
HOMEWOOD, AL - The big winter storm almost ruined a big money-maker for one local florist.

The storm hit during a peak preparation time for Valentine's day.

Dorothy McDaniel's Flower Market is located in Homewood.

The owner sent most of her employees home early Wednesday before the snow moved in and they weren't able to start or complete some Valentine's Day orders.

"We possibly could have taken more orders had we had Wednesday to prepare, but you know mother nature sometimes isn't kind to us." said McDaniel.

Florists on busy at the shop today making up for lost time. They're cutting, clipping and creating arrangements.

"A good designer, depending on the dollar value can produce three to four designs and hour," said McDaniel.

She says designers lost about 40 to 50 hours in preparation time because of the storm.

She also says about 6,000 roses could have died, if not for the storm moving out of the area so quickly.
