Police: suspect in Cary murder commits suicide

Cary police said the suspect in the shooting death of a 74-year-old man Friday committed suicide in Florida.

Late Friday, police issued an arrest warrant for Eric Paul Engel, 43, of Durham, NH for the shooting death of Aleksander "Lenny" Wysocki at 215 Trent Woods Way in Cary. Law enforcement tracked Engel to Florida where authorities believe he committed suicide.

In Florida, the Marion County Sheriff's Office said Engel contacted a family member and confessed to murdering a man in North Carolina.

The sheriff's office said Engel was at the Anglers Resort in Dunnellon, Fla. The Dunnellon Police Department, along with the Marion County Sheriff's Office SWAT team, went to the resort to apprehend Engel.

Authorities said contact was made with Engel by phone and he was encouraged surrender peacefully, however he stayed inside his room where a short time later he took his own life.

Police said Engel was a family friend of Wysocki.

The University of New Hampshire lists Engel as a lecturer in communication on its website.
