Snow brings rash of storage unit burglaries to Gadsden

Posted: Updated:
GADSDEN, AL - With the January and February snowstorms came lots of headaches for drivers, but it also brought a rash of burglaries to the Gadsden area.

From January 28 to Wednesday, multiple storage units have been broken into and emptied out, according to Gadsden police.

The main two places that were hit were Off Campus Storage on George Wallace Drive and A1 Storage on Piedmont Cutoff.

On Wednesday alone, there were at least a dozen units broken into.

Gadsden police say they believe the crimes are related. They say when strings of storage units are burglarized, they are usually committed by the same person or group.

Police reports show that items taken include electronics, tools, jewelry, and large amounts of clothes. A Suzuki motorcycle was also stolen.

Off Campus Storage says the burglars have been destroying the whole lock mechanism to get into the units, and on Wednesday, the thieves arrived around 10:30 p.m. The owner says that’s much earlier than typical burglars, who usually strike between 2-3 a.m. The owner says the company is working on improving the lighting situation around the property, and he hopes that will deter burglars and make it easier to see the perpetrators on camera.

A1 Storage said they have had four to five burglaries since the first snow. Staff there are also working to increase security.

If anyone has information about the recent string of burglaries, please call Gadsden Police at 256-549-4500.
