DURHAM, N.C. -

An app developed in the American Underground is leading the way to giving shoppers and diners a more personal experience.

If you have ever gone shopping or out to eat, and forgotten your coupon or needed a recommendation, there's an app for that thanks to Durham-based PopUp.

Co-founder and CEO Dov Cohn said the app is for anyone who wants to be kept "in the know," by offering location-based discounts and recommendations.

"You don't have to think about, 'Is there a coupon I should remember to take? What do I need to know?'" Cohn explained. "If there is something I need to know there, your phone buzzes and the store goes, 'Hey, there's something you need to know here.'"

The app works by sending push notifications to users when they arrive at a participating business. While brands and stores can send deals and information directly to its customers through the app, Cohn explained there is a social aspect to PopUp as well.

"Maybe your best friend had a great experience at a restaurant and wants to make sure you know you should try the salmon there or this bottle of wine is fantastic. This is a way for them to leave a note for you there," Cohn said.

PopUp is currently only available in the iTunes App Store as a free download, but an Android app is in the works.

In the Triangle, PopUp works with Raleigh Eats, Durham Eats, Chapel Hill Eats. Carolina Hurricanes, Shop the Triangle and Lonerider beer, and Cohn said more stores and restaurants will be added soon.
