Two children are recovering at Children’s Hospital after accidentally shooting themselves in separate incidents Tuesday evening. In the first case, Birmingham Police say a 6-year-old boy found a gun in the glove compartment of his uncle’s car around 6 p.m. The child then hid the gun in the in the back seat while his uncle was away.
According to investigators, when his uncle returned to the car and began to drive, the child pulled the weapon and accidentally shot himself in the foot. The uncle immediately drove the child to Children’s of Alabama hospital for treatment.
Less than an hour later, on Birmingham’s east side, a 3-year-old accidentally shot himself in his abdomen at an apartment located in the 600 block of Brussels Circle. Birmingham police spokesman Lt. Sean Edwards says the child found the gun in a sofa and that the child’s mother said it belonged to a friend. Right now an investigation continues in this case into whether or not charges will be filed.
Both young boys are recuperating at Children’s hospital.
