Alabama man sentenced for hanging puppy

ATHENS, Ala. -

A west Alabama man faces a six-month jail sentence after a photo was posted online of a hanging puppy.

Andrew Parrish of Valley Grande and his fiancee Caroline Dunnam were arrested last month after a picture was posted on Facebook depicting a black puppy hanging by its neck from the ceiling. Parrish pleaded guilty on Tuesday to one count of animal cruelty.

District Attorney Michael Jackson says the charges were dropped against Parrish’s fiancee as part of the plea agreement. Jackson says Parrish will begin serving his jail sentence this weekend. He will be on probation for 24 months and is required to serve 100 hours of community service. Parrish will not be permitted to own an animal.

The District Attorney says the puppy is doing well and has a new owner.
