Job Watch: Chattahoochee Valley job outlook for 2014

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. - Economists from the University of Georgia predict 1400 new jobs could be added to the Columbus area this year.

“1400 would definitely be a good year for us,” says Bill Murphy, the Executive Vice President of Economic Development with the Columbus Chamber of Commerce. “While it's down from last year, I think we have some projects that show significant promise.”

Murphy says there were 3300 new jobs announced last year, but many of those jobs have yet to come to fruition. The Georgia Department of Labor reports only 660 of those jobs were created, so 1,400 would be an improvement.

However, a new report from the congressional budget office shows proposed federal minimum wage hike could stunt job growth nationwide. The report found that if the minimum wage is increased to $10.10, 900,000 Americans could be lifted out of poverty, but the report added that 500,000 jobs could be cut. President Obama supports raising the federal wage from $7.25 to $10.10, while Republicans say it will kill jobs.

Murphy says they're focusing on creating opportunities where people can make above minimum wage. He says it all starts with education and raising skill sets to meet the jobs of the future. As for the future of jobs in the Chattahoochee Valley, he says there are some big announcements on the way.

“Stay tuned,” says Murphy. “There will be opportunities and we'll work to do what we can so residents of Muscogee County and certainly our region are among the first to know about those jobs.”

Murphy says he expects the manufacturing sector to make up a lot of those new jobs in our area.
